I had to do a clean installation of Windows 8.1, then upgrade to Windows 10. Now the search box function is showing up on the taskbar. This is one out of many fixes that I have noticed.
This is because when I first upgraded to Windows 10, it was through Windows Update. Windows Update gave me a version of Windows 10 full of bugs and problems. Even after installing the most recent updatesI was having problems with error messages from programs and some didn't even uninstall or run at all.But now, since I used the media creation tool from here:was able to upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and receive a way better version of Windows 10 without all the compatibility issues, error messages, and bugs. And I'm glad I have the search box function on the taskbar. Well, I just found out that if you right click taskbar and click properties you will see the option to 'use small taskbar buttons.' Now, if this box is CHECKED then you will NOT have access to enable the search box function whatsoever. Thanks for nothing Microsoft. I can't believe I spent so many hours on hold trying to find out a solution to this problem only to be told that Microsoft doesn't know why I couldn't enable the search box.I downgraded to Windows 8.1 and upgraded to Windows 10 about 3 times before I figured this out.F.cking a.
